Integrated approach between operations and decommissioning

One operator’s experience on a particular project is that despite expectations that there would be consideration of decommissioning plans 2-3 years before commencement, development of clear project plan from commencement through to completion and a consistent application of process and seamless transition from operations to decommissioning, a change in strategy towards revitalized field exploitation meant that decommissioning activity was suspended and therefore preparations for decommissioning were not fully in place when CoP occurred

This in turn meant that opportunities to reduce cost by pre-investment in well decommissioning were not realised due to the changes in strategy.

N/A

The lesson learned is that an integrated approach could have enabled improvements in decommissioning without detracting from other project opportunities. in future the operator will ensure that the appropriate project management tools are applied and that stage gate requirements are adhered to.
